Help Wanted

About a month ago, I applied for a part-time job that I saw advertised in the paper. The job was business manager for the Bahama Village Music Program, a non-profit agency that teaches music and the arts to children, mostly from Bahama Village (where we live), but open to children from anywhere in the city.

I didn't get the position. It went to an existing employee of the program and that was OK with me, as I was having second thoughts about being tied down to one place for four hours every week day. Besides, I've been earning considerably more per hour doing a bit of computer work around town.

What I didn't expect was to be invited to join their Board of Directors. The same thing happened in New Hampshire at the end of 2002. I applied for a job at the county adult education agency, didn't get it, and wound up on the Board of Directors. I rate my own contribution to that organization as much greater than it would have been as part-time bookkeeper.

So now I must decide whether to accept the invitation. Decisions, decisions.
