Cock Fighting in the Keys

As many of you know, Janet works at the Key West Chicken Store, and I'm a volunteer member of the Rooster Rescue Team. I was quite shaken tonight to discover that Burger King is actually promoting cock fights on the internet. (Click on the link at the bottom of that page.) Despite the misleading description of the two combatants as "chickens" and the event as a chicken fight, it's quite clear that the two so-called chickens are in fact roosters, or cocks as they are sometimes known.

I've never seen such a disgusting spectacle. We hope that you'll all join us in a boycott of Burger King. Even though we never eat there, we vow to continue to never eat there. We hope you will do the same.

When I saw Spicy choking the other chicken, well I thought I would vomit. Burger King should be ashamed of themselves.

Cock fighting was a popular "sport" in the Keys in days gone by. Although it has been declared illegal in Florida and every state but Louisiana and Arkansas, we continue to hear rumors of fights being staged on Rockland Key, and possibly here in Key West. There's a group of kids in Key West who go around with nets and cages, capturing roosters. It is believed that they are being paid by adults to capture chickens for training as fighting cocks. We've been told to be careful about interfering with the "chicken boys" as the adults who are involved can be dangerous, but I can't stand idly by as they harass and capture some of the beautiful roosters who populate our fair island home.

The Rooster Rescue Team does a fantastic job of saving chickens who are sick or injured. All profits from the Chicken Store go toward the work of the RRT, and you can buy products from the Store on-line. Help them out if you can.
