Key West and the NSA

In 1935, Sinclair Lewis wrote the novel It Can't Happen Here. In 1949, George Orwell wrote the novel 1984.

When the news broke on Wednesday about NSA's surreptitious data logging of the telephone calls of American citizens, I heard a brief report on one of the cable channels naming Key West as one of three locations where data is being concentrated. Arizona was another. I forget the third.

I can't locate that reference again using Google, but if true, I would imagine that it has something to do with Joint Interagency Task Force South, a multi-agency task force located at the southernmost end of Truman Annex. (In fact, the real southernmost point in the United States is located on that property; the buoy where tourists go to be photgraphed is a short distance from that point, just outside the fence of JIATF's property.)

This is JIATFS' Mission Statement:

Joint Interagency Task Force South conducts counter illicit trafficking operations, intelligence fusion and multi-sensor correlation to detect, monitor, and handoff suspected illicit trafficking targets; promotes security cooperation and coordinates country team and partner nation initiatives in order to defeat the flow of illicit traffic.

The Task Force is made up of representatives of all the military services and an alphabet soup of other government agencies: CBP - Customs and Border Protection
CIA - Central Intelligence Agency
DEA - Drug Enforcement Administration
DoD - Department of Defense
DIA - Defense Itnelligence Agency
FBI - Federal Bureau of Investigation
NSA - National Security Agency
NGA - National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency

There are, I believe, representatives of foreign governments assigned there as well, principally from Latin America.

If nothing else, we stand to be well-protected if the evil-doers decide to attack us directly here in the U.S.

Interesting tidbit on the JIATFS. Never knew anything of them.

James Bamford has written two books on the NSA "No Such Agency" is the internal joke. I read the first one back in the 80's.

The Rendon Group is another secretive bunch.
