Mandatory Evacuation Underway

Monroe County issued a mandatory evacuation order for the Keys effective at 1 PM today. The Emergency Operations Centers swing into action at 6 AM tomorrow.

My post about hurricanes on the 14th drew a reasoned response from Lee Davis, chief meteorologist for Keys Network. Lee chides me (gently) and says, in part, "Friends, please do not jeopardize your lives because you believe you know more than those who have devoted their lives to the study of tropical systems. When there's an order to evacuate, emergency managers tend to err on the side of public safety. That's their job.

He's right, of course. We are not unprepared. We've given thought to our safety and to the need for shelter if Ernesto intensifies, changes course, or otherwise doesn't do what is forecast as of now. We have the additional responsibility of preparing this house for a storm, as John and David are on a vacation trip. It's nearly ready, but there are a couple of shutters left to put up and some loose items to put away. Batten down the hatches, as we used to say in the Navy.
