I ushered for Captain Rick at the American Acoustic Music concert at Key West High School's Glynn Archer Performing Arts Center Friday Night. The turnout was somewhat a disappointment, but it didn't affect the quality of the music.
Angel Band opened up with a set of upbeat vocal numbers. Tom Rush then did a transition set, playing solo and with Angel Band and David Bromberg on a couple of numbers. David Bromberg closed out the night with his quartet, the last few numbers of which I missed in order to get home by my appointed hour.
Key West can be a tough town to promote national music acts in. Friday night the Key West Symphony was performing Holst's The Planets at the Tennessee Williams Arts Center, which has a regular following, some of whom might well have been in the audience at the high school on another occasion.
As event promoter, Rick sweated out the run-up to the concert, but that night he was all calmness and organization. As he said to me, "It's not about the money, it's about the music."
